2009 WINNERS Scottish School Magazine Awards

St George’s School for Girls

St George’s
School for Girls takes top award

2009 SHORTLIST Scottish School Magazine Competition

The aim of the competition is to encourage pupils in every secondary school throughout Scotland to work in teams to produce their very own school magazine, newsletter, newspaper or online magazine.

It is an opportunity for pupils to showcase their writing, editing, design, production, photographic and business skills and to highlight not only well-planned team work, but also individual flair and creativity.

The project must be pupil-led with teachers taking a supervisory role only. Through the competition we aim to help pupils gain an insight into the exciting world of publishing and encourage school-leavers to consider the magazine industry as a career choice.

We encourage pupils to work with other departments in the school, such as IT, English, Business Studies and Art – and we encourage them to engage with the wider community and involve local businesses and organisations in their project.

The competition will help to improve literacy and communication skills and give pupils business awareness and confidence when starting out in their chosen career, whatever that may be.

General Teaching Council for Scotland sponsors school magazine competition

PPA Scotland welcomes Teaching Scotland, the magazine of the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), as a new sponsor of the Scottish School Magazine Competition. The General Teaching Council for Scotland and their magazine team has committed their support to the competition through to 2011.  Established in 1965, the GTCS was the first independent regulatory body for teachers in the UK and one of the first teaching councils in the world.

Glenise Borthwick who heads the communications team at GTCS, said: "Teaching Scotland is delighted to be sponsoring the award for Best Editorial Content in the 2009 Scottish School Magazine Competition.  The competition fits perfectly with the values of both Teaching Scotland and GTCS. We are very happy that we are in a position to support the cross curriculae development of pupils in this way."

Daniel Lambie, editor of Teaching Scotland, added: "Becoming a more integral part of the school community is one of the aims of the magazine. Supporting this competition will certainly help us to achieve that and I am sure will help the journalists of the future hone their skills."

Scottish President John Currie said: "The NFRN is proud to be sponsoring the PPA Scottish School Magazine Competition for 2008 and 2009. Schoolchildren are key customers so we are delighted to have the opportunity to reward those showing flair and creativity. We wish the best of luck to all entrants and look forward to celebrating their successes."

Media partner - TESS

The Times Educational Supplement Scotland (TESS) has become the media partner for the Scottish School Magazine Competition. TESS is the pre-eminent publication for teachers, education managers and all involved with schools and further education colleges throughout Scotland.

PPA Scotland is aware that many pupils do not know much about the printing and publishing industry. It is important to capture the interest and enthusiasm of school children before they take decisions about college and university courses and TESS is ideally placed to work with PPA Scotland in communicating the message.
