The Periodicals Training Council

The Periodicals Training Council (PTC) is the lead body for best practice in training and development and people management for the magazine industry.  PTC enhances the performance of people working in magazines and professional media publishing by improving the quality and availability of training, acting as a focus for guidance on employment best practice and encouraging new talent into the industry through the provision of careers information.  Our vision is for a fully professionalised industry, with equal recognition and opportunity for employees across all functions of the business.

PTC:

  • acts as the main forum for discussing the industry's training and people management issues and for taking initiatives and decisions
  • maintains contact with the Government and other external organisations
  • provides advice and guidance to magazine publishers about training and employment best practice
  • identifies the industry's training needs, and ensuring that courses, learning materials and techniques are developed and made available
  • acts as the lead body for developing standards for training and qualifications
  • monitors and accredits magazine courses run by universities and colleges
  • runs courses, seminars and network groups
  • provides career information for people wishing to join the industry
  • remains independent but informed.

PTC oversees the delivery of high quality vocational training for the industry through PPA Training and sits within the trade association for the magazine industry, the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA).

We offer support and advice in three key areas:

1.  Encouraging new talent:  PTC is convinced there is no better career than one in magazines!  PTC runs events for potential and/or new industry entrants to help develop an understanding of and passion for the industry.  PTC monitors the standards of courses supplied by external training providers, provides an insight to the industry and identifies and celebrates talent and success.  Some of the projects that sit in this area of work include:

·         PTC Course Accreditation – Working closely with a committee of senior editors from PPA member companies, PTC accredits a number of pre-entry magazine journalism courses (under and post graduate).  PTC accredited courses produce journalists who are able to work with a minimum of supervision and further training and will be competent after a very short period of time on a magazine.

·         Careers Guide - PTC provides careers advice to those wishing to enter into a career in magazine publishing.  Careers information can be found on the Careers and Training pages on our website and PTC provides a free careers guide to schools, universities and individual enquirers.

·         Guidelines for work experience – PTC issues guidelines to promote best practice when offering work experience placements which are widely used across the industry.

·         PTC New Journalist of the Year Awards – PTC hosts an annual awards event aiming to recognise and reward new talent to the industry.  The event is preceded by an annual masterclass seminar.

2.  Developing existing talent:  PTC is involved in many activities that focus on core business personnel – e.g. publishers, editors, production controllers, sales teams – providing relevant and timely information and training that is accessible and practical and helps raise professional standards in the industry.  These include:

·         PPA Qualifications – Working alongside industry experts, PTC has developed a number of vocational qualifications including the PPA Diploma in Publishing, PPA Editorial Diploma, PPA Certificate in Production Management, PPA Certificate in Direct Marketing, PPA Professional Certificate In Journalism and PPA Certificate in Circulation Management for B2B Magazines.  PTC will develop a vocational qualification at entry, intermediate and advanced level for all the core job families in the industry.

·         PPA Training – PPA Training provides vocational training courses to the industry.  PPA Training delivers cost effective training covering media sales, circulation, subscription, editorial, production, on-line and other general publishing areas developed by PTC.

3.  Supporting the industry:  This area of work includes activities that focus on encouraging and facilitating the exchange of ideas, information and best practice and the development of collaborative relationships.  This includes initiatives such as:

·         PPA HR and Training network group – Senior HR and Training professionals of PPA member companies are invited to belong to the network which aims to improve competitiveness in hiring and retaining staff, exchange ideas and experiences in HR management and promote and share best practice.  PTC facilitates the group which meets three times a year and exchanges information and views throughout the year using the PTC hosted on-line discussion forum.

·          PPA salary survey - PTC administers an online salary survey on behalf of the industry working in partnership with CELRE, an independent survey provider with over 35 years’ experience.  At a small cost, participation in the survey enables companies to access salary and benefits data for the industry.

·         PPA benchmarking survey - PTC invites PPA member companies to exchange information on employee benefits to help with external benchmarking.  The data is collated in April and returned to those who participate at the beginning of May.  This is a free service to PPA members.
