For more information on these initiatives, please visit the following websites: www.ppamarketing.net PPA also represents magazine interests within the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) and the National Readership Survey (NRS), which offers a substantial discount to PPA members. DISTRIBUTION SERVICES: PROTECTING THE SUPPLY CHAINEnsuring universal, effective and cost-efficient routes to market for magazine publishers is crucial to PPA’s activities. PPA works to protect members’ interests in the areas of newstrade & retail, subscriptions and postal affairs through consultation, lobbying and dialogue with all parties involved in the supply chain. This activity has three main objectives:
PUBLISHING SERVICESHR and training Members receive a significant discount on the cost of all PPA Training courses, covering media sales, editorial, publishing skills and circulation. In addition, members can obtain four professional qualifications for magazine publishers:
Careers The Periodicals Training Council (PTC) [PTC logo] seeks to encourage new talent into the magazine industry by providing careers information and accrediting magazine courses run by universities and colleges. Credit and finance A number of services are designed to help publishers save money, monitor expenditure and minimise late payment from agencies: Members can participate in a cost and revenue benchmarking initiative designed to help publishers improve their financial and operating performance. Agency recognition scheme: PPA protects its members’ revenues through monitoring the financial health of media planning and buying agencies, and through the sharing of information about payment performance. PPA works closely with the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise to improve links with publishing businesses and develop guidelines on issues such as the taxation of freelances and research and development tax credits. Editorial PPA is one of 16 ‘gatekeepers’ authorised by the Police to issue press cards to its members, freelance journalists working for members or approved suppliers. PPA co-ordinates the Teenage Magazine Arbitration Panel (TMAP), the magazine industry’s self-regulatory body which ensures that the sexual content of teenage magazines is presented in a responsible and appropriate manner. Interactive All PPA members are automatic members of PPAInteractive, whose focus is to help magazine publishers drive online revenue and develop industry-wide standards. PPAi’s activities centre around a code of conduct, measurement and auditing, online marketing, paid-for content, new technologies and research. PPAi is a corporate member of AOP which ensures representation of members’ interests on the AOP council and access to AOP events and initiatives at discounted rates. Production Members can access Pass4press, and its associated initiatives proof4press and pic4press, a set of best practice standards and guidelines designed to eliminate the potential for errors in the digital workflow caused by incorrect file formats. The guidelines are revised continually to reflect the introduction of new applications and platforms, and distributed free to advertisers and agencies. This ongoing education process improves the digital workflow and can save publishers hundreds of pounds in unnecessary reproduction costs, as well as minimising the need for compensation to advertisers in disputes over copy supply. International PPA offers guidance to members about export and international matters and has produced a free export guide offering practical advice to UK publishers about how to export printed and electronic titles. The guide is available to members only. PPA is a member of the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP), the international organisation for magazine publishers. Members can register to receive FIPP’s regular publications and attend FIPP events at member rates. PPA is also a member of the European Federation of Magazine Publishers (FAEP), which lobbies the European Institutions and informs and educates members about issues including freedom of expression, commercial communications, the internal market, environment, the information society and copyright. EVENTS AND SEMINARSPPA organises the national magazine publishing conference and awards for editorial and publishing excellence – PPA Magazines 200x - in May each year. The event addresses every aspect of the business of publishing magazines in 12 tactical publishing seminars and five awards ceremonies. These are run alongside two strategic ad marketing conferences promoting the magazine medium to clients and advertisers in the consumer and B2B marketplace. Content of all the seminars is driven by member representatives on each of PPA’s core committees. In addition, PPA runs up to 30 conferences, seminars, forums, briefings and awards events every year, attracting up to 6,500 delegates. As well as updating members on a range of issues that affect their businesses and providing a forum for debate, these events are an excellent networking opportunity for members. All members are invited to attend PPA events and receive a substantial discount on delegate places. Regular events include: AOP Conference & awards MEMBER SERVICES & INFORMATIONNational and special interest groups PPA houses a number of specialist groups for members with similar interests to share information and address specific issues: The Independent Publishers’ Advisory Council (IPAC) [logo] provides a forum to bring independent publishers together to enable the sharing of experience and information, and ensure that independent publishers are fully represented within PPA and the magazine industry. PPA Scotland provides member publishers in Scotland with a local network group, and mounts a number of initiatives to support Scottish magazine publishers. PPA Ireland is a franchise of PPA and represents the interests of Irish magazine and B2B media publishers. PPA’s Partworks Group aims to raise awareness of the considerable success of this sector within the industry, as well as offering collective strength on the key issues affecting members. The Children’s Publications Group provides a non-competitive environment for the discussion of common issues and initiatives specifically relevant to publishers of children’s magazines. PPA publications Members are entitled to receive free copies of all of PPA’s regular publications: PPA’s website www.ppa.co.uk is a comprehensive information resource for publishers. A members-only section includes legal updates, a list of PPA recognised agencies, CAP ad alerts, and downloads of member-only publications. E-update is a weekly email newsletter sent to all PPA members, summarising the latest PPA and magazine industry news. Magazine News is produced four times a year and campaigns on behalf of the magazine industry by promoting its strength to advertisers and agencies. Magazine News: Member Briefing is a monthly newsletter updating PPA members on current news issues and the activities of the association, including advertising, human resources, public affairs, interactive publishing and production. In addition PPA produces six specialist email newsletters, covering legal, HR, agency recognition, B2B and consumer advertising. Members can also receive regular email updates from the Association of Online Publishers (AOP). PPA’s annual Members’ handbook contains a complete list of members, their publications and affiliated products, and details of all board and committee members. The handbook is distributed to members only. Access to suppliers In addition to its publisher members, PPA has nearly 100 associate members who are all suppliers to the industry. They range from printers to media sales houses to distributors and solicitors. Suppliers are listed online and within PPA’s regular publications. Meeting facilities PPA’s central London meeting rooms may be booked by members for a nominal fee. |
