Managing editorial teams

Module Leader: Wendy Bristow

Overview: Have creatives always seemed a bit of an enigma to you? To get the best of their talents, publishers need to provide support and leadership. This module will focus on the publisher's role in managing and developing effective editorial teams.

Module Content:
Day One:
(i) Publisher and editor - a strategic alliance for a common purpose

  • Who does what? Defining the roles and shared goals

(ii) Leadership - Cultivate the right style to see results

  • Why should they follow?
  • Showing conspicuous commitment rather than total control
  • Demonstrating competency, judgement and respect
  • Delegate but don't abdicate - using empowerment to unlock potential

(iii) Motivation - Identifying key incentives for creative people

  • Why do it
  • Directing personal goals towards shared ones

(iv) Teamwork - recognise the need for complementary skills and a balance of talent

  • Who have you got and who do you need?
  • Acknowledging strengths of individuals and their team roles
  • Your role as a team player


(v) Communication - sharing your vision and making it happen

  • Is everyone on message or is it over and out?
  • Paint a picture of what you want and who's in it
  • Inviting ideas and methods on how to get there
  • The importance of information exchange and what it means  

(vi) Time Management - avoiding the deadline drama

  • Is that task urgent or important? Knowing the Difference
  • Setting and managing realistic schedules

(viii) Resolving People Problems - getting the best from   individuals and yourself

  • How are they doing?
  • Giving and receiving constant feedback

(ix) Creative Negotiation - coping with conflict by agreeing solutions

  • Who's magazine is it anyway?
  • Avoiding 'turf wars'
