Paper Grades and Impact on Production Values                                 Module leader UPM

NB: this module takes place at UPM Caledonian Mill and includes a mill tour. Delegates should allow an additional half day for travelling.

Module content

Day one

(i) Paper making and paper grades
-        introduction to paper
-        raw materials and their characteristics
-        paper manufacturing process
-        defining paper grades
-        technical characteristics
-        mill tour
-        laboratory exercise

Day two

(ii) Paper and the magazine brand
-        impact of paper
-        definition of end users
-        paper as a communication medium
-        quality trends and development

(iii) Choosing the right paper
-        defining end user requirements
-        printing methods vs. paper grades
-        the intended message   

(iv) Controlling your costs
-        pricing structure
-        stock control
-        paper costs in publishing

(v) Environmental
-        legislation and environmental certification schemes
-        sustainable development
-       corporate social responsibility
