Empire editor Mark Dinning spends this session focusing on the Celebrity Interview drawing from seven years of his encounters with some of the biggest egos on the planet! Mark will cover how to draw out the most newsworthy and explosive quotes from your interviewee, the art of unlocking particularly awkward subjects, the etiquette of The Hollywood Junket, and how to ask those difficult questions without being blacklisted by agents and publicists. As a bonus there will also be exclusive, and no doubt invaluable, tips on how to survive an entire day in the pub with Colin Farrell and the perils of interviewing Angelina Jolie in hotpants. (Angelina being the one in the hotpants, obviously.) Pitch: hitch or ditch? Magazines fail without consistently great and winning ideas generation. In this session, Sara Cremer, editor, Eve, and Jim Douglas, editorial director, Future Publishing, explain why creativity is the lifeblood of magazines, explore the general principles of creative thinking and demonstrate tried and tested ways to kick start ideas, including reading your reader’s thoughts and finding that much needed inspiration in unlikely places. The good, the bad and the ugly Heat editor, Mark Frith, and Soo Abram, editorial design manager at Reed Business Information, compare the design elements of business professional and consumer publishing. Including a before-and-after redesign sample, the team will demonstrate how things that look mediocre can be improved and evolved into a new and workable form. This hopes to be an informative and entertaining masterclass - the only dilemma being how to equate the front covers of Heat and Farmer's Weekly without mentioning udders... Mags, rags and riches Drawing from their own experience two top editors guide you through key career development stages, from perfecting your CV to impressing at interviews and knowing which career move is best for you. Sound advice is invaluable at any stage of a career, but even more when you are just starting out; Giles Barrie, editor, Property Week, and the 2005 PTC New Journalist of the Year, Stuart Hood, incoming editor, FHM, share their tips on getting ahead and getting noticed.
