The PTC Editorial Training Consultants Committee

The role of the ETCC

Members of the ETCC support the work carried out by the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) in three key areas:

ETCC members are involved in:

Course Accreditation - PTC accredits a number of pre-entry magazine journalism courses ensuring they produce journalists who are able to work with a minimum of supervision and further training and will be competent after a very short period of time working for a magazine.  ETCC members carry out the assessment of these courses, along with the Director of PTC.

Careers Guide - PTC provides careers advice and a free careers guide to schools, universities and individual enquirers.  ETCC members are instrumental in the development and updating of our careers guide.

PTC New Journalist of the Year Awards An annual event hosted by PTC that aims to recognise and reward new talent to the industry.  ETCC members judge the awards and recommend speakers for the preceding editorial seminars.

Masterclasses PTC runs one Spring editorial masterclass for students and new journalists and an Autumn design masterclass for students and new designers!  The masterclasses aim to help the audience learn more about what it is like to work in magazines.  ETCC members help identify speakers and host the events.

In 2006 PTC aims to establish a Guest Speaker Directory to ensure accredited courses are linked closely to the industry and will be working with publishers to promote work experience opportunities.

PPA QualificationsWorking alongside industry experts, PTC has developed a number of vocational qualifications including the PPA Diploma in Publishing, PPA Editorial Diploma, PPA Certificate in Production Management, PPA Certificate in Direct Marketing, PPA Professional Certificate In Journalism and PPA Certificate in Circulation Management for Business to Business Magazines.  Our strategy is to develop a vocational qualification at entry, intermediate and advanced level for all the core job families in the industry.  ETCC members helped develop the Editorial Diploma and act as assessors for the Professional Certificate in Journalism.

Guidelines for work experiencePTC developed guidelines to promote best practice when offering work experience placements which are widely used across the industry.  It is currently developing guidance notes for internships.
