PPA Jobs - Jobs in magazines, media & publishing

As part of its commitment to promoting careers, rewarding excellence and raising standards in training and development, PTC has established an accreditation process ensuring student journalists looking for a career in magazines meet the expectations of recruiting editors. PTC accredits 14 courses across the country with more working their way towards meeting the standards.

On many of these courses students produce a dummy magazine, but few ever get to see their work printed and bound in finished format. There is a world of difference from making a magazine as a classroom exercise to producing something that is judged by the industry and PTC - along with leading industry suppliers UPM-Kymenne and Polestar - developed the Magazine Academy competition to give students a chance to showcase their talent. Each year the competition has got bigger and better with this year’s event attracting 35 entries.

Students are invited to produce either a new launch idea accompanied by a mocked up cover and detailed contents list, or produce a whole magazine, with as much finish as possible, generating the editorial, photography, design and layout. Judges looked for students to present genuinely original proposals for both categories. The quality of feature writing, editing skills, design and presentation are critical.

This year's winners were announced at a reception at The Lansdowne Club on Tuesday 7 October 2008.

Competition guidelines
Students can choose from two winning categories and may enter one or both categories

1. New Magazine Concept
Entry brief: Produce a summary of your new launch idea, using the directions in the How To Enter section of this brochure. This should be accompanied by a mocked up cover, plus a detailed contents list. This can be the work of an individual student, or it can be the product of teamwork.

2. New Student Magazine
Entry brief: Produce a whole magazine, with as much finish as possible. Generate the editorial, photography, design and layout for your new magazine. Use the directions in the How To Enter Section to produce a summary of your idea. The new magazine can be the work of an individual student, or it can be the product of teamwork.

WHAT THE JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR:
Judges will be looking to students to present genuinely original proposals for both categories. The quality of feature writing, editing skills, design and presentation will be critical, especially in the New Student Magazine Category. The winners will be those entries which are judged to show the most innovation and editorial quality, and which display the best grasp of commercial reality.

WHAT YOU WIN:
The winners of New Magazine Concept will be presented with a framed certificate at an intimate awards ceremony in London on Wednesday 19 September 2007. The winning entry for New Student Magazine will be printed on UPM paper grade, bound professionally by Polestar and showcased to members of the Periodical Publishers Association, an organisation which represents all of the key names in the consumer, business-to-business and customer magazine publishing houses. Copies will also be given to the winning college with samples for each student for their portfolio.
