Empire publishes exclusive holographic Star Wars covers
Bauer Media’s Empire magazine hits newsstands today with a holographic cover celebrating the eagerly anticipated December release of the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Ellie Austin scored a job at Immediate Media as a Features Writer for Radio Times after graduating from the Magazine Journalism MA course at City University. Here she talks about working in the fast-paced world of a major weekly magazine and the power of a good coffee.
The issue contains an eight-page spread, which includes exclusive interviews with Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the franchise, and Director Rian Johnson.
The cover that is available to purchase features Daisy Ridley as Rey wielding a lightsaber while standing next to Hamill as Skywalker.
On the exclusive holographic subscriber cover, Rey is passing a lightsaber into Skywalker’s robotic hand.
Empire’s Editor-in-Chief, Terri White, commented: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to be the biggest film of 2017 when it hits cinemas in December and as ever, Empire is there from the start, bringing you the first word on the movie from director Rian Johnson and star Mark Hamill, as well as a raft of exclusive new pictures.
“The newsstand and subscriber covers – printed using holographic ‘Mirri’ board – are the latest in a line of creative collaborations between Empire and Disney and Lucasfilm. The exclusive covers were revealed by Mark Hamill – Luke Skywalker himself – on social media earlier this week and have elicited the biggest response of any Empire cover this year.”
Empire revealed the subscriber cover on September 1, which Hamill retweeted from his Twitter account @HamillHimself:
Mark Hamill then posted the following tweet a few days later:
In 2016, Empire published six collectable 3D covers starring characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In 2005, the magazine collaborated with Lucasfilm to publish a limited-edition ‘breathing’ Darth Vader cover, which was achieved by embedding chip technology into the magazine’s spine.
