  • Best Sales Performance

    This category recognises the team or individual that has achieved outstanding sales performance on a magazine, project or brand extension over the past 12 months. 

    Judges will require evidence of:

    • Proactive generation of and growth in revenue, volume, yield and market share (as appropriate)
    • Innovative, cross-platform solutions addressing customers’ needs
    • Expert knowledge of market, medium and brand for increased revenue
    • Evidence of client satisfaction through testimonials

  • Columnist of the Year

    Open to commentators and opinion-formers who reach their audiences through a regular by-lined column or feature. Our judges will be looking for content of the highest quality and insight that informs, educates, and leads opinion within their target communities. Entrants should have the ability to provoke debate: appealing to, or challenging, the magazine’s audience. Judges will look for someone whose presence within the publication has made a positive contribution to its success.

    The winning entry will show clear evidence of the writer’s brilliance with words, along with his or her authority, insight, and accuracy, all delivered with real wit, style, and sheer force of personality.

  • Designer of the Year - Consumer Magazines

    This category is open to designers for magazines which fall in the following categories: Consumer Magazine, Special Interest Magazine, Newspaper Supplement.
     
    This award recognises the Art Director or Designer who can demonstrate truly brilliant and outstanding design in the last 12 months on a particular title or brand. Our judges will be looking for evidence of how the designer’s sheer excellence throughout the year has played a key part in the success of the brand, whether focused on single or multiple platforms. Our judges will also be looking for coherence, excellence in the use of photography, typography and illustration, and all other classic design elements.

  • Event of the Year

    This award will recognise an outstanding event from a Scottish media brand. The event can be an exhibition, awards, festival, or any other type of event at which the publisher brings together its target audience face-to-face. The event can either stem from an existing parent brand or be a wholly standalone experience.

    Our judges will primarily be looking for evidence of real innovation and creativity here, along with an event that has proven commercial success, which really engages with the target audience, and which looks to have real legs for some time to come.

  • Best Use of Social Media

    This award recognises outstanding creativity and measured success on social media platforms. Our judges will be looking for a brilliant social media campaign across one or more platforms that has created lasting impact and delivered real measurable results. All major social media platforms are eligible - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Our judges will be looking for tangible evidence of a social campaign that really moved the needle in terms of impact for the brand involved.

    Entries should demonstrate:

    • Creative use of social channels to amplify digital content and build the brand’s profile
    • Evidence of direct audience engagement
    • Genuine commercial impact

  • Digital Innovation of the Year

    This award recognises true excellence in the development of digital products, whether these are websites, apps, mobile offerings, tablet iterations, e-commerce products, or interactive tools.
     
    Products should clearly showcase innovation, creative flair, strong design values, excellent product development, and robust usability. Judges will be looking for metrics that show depth of engagement among users, as well as real evidence of the product’s commercial success and wider contribution to the brand.

    Entries can be standalone products and do not have to stem from a printed product, though our judges will also be looking for any success in leveraging brands across multiple platforms.

  • Email Communication of the Year

    This award recognises excellence in email communication. The communication can be a standalone newsletter or a spin-off from an existing magazine brand. Judges will be looking for communications that show the innovative implementation of creative ideas and are precision targeted at their audience(s), segmenting them where appropriate. They will reward entries that show evidence of success, including but not limited to click-through rates, open rates, monetisation, and subscription increases.

  • Cover of the Year

    Does your magazine cover shout ‘pick me up and read me’? This category rewards the very best cover of a Scottish magazine in the last year. The overall winner of this category will be voted for by the public, through an online poll, and magazines will be encouraged to campaign for their cover with their readership. In drawing up the shortlist, judges will look for demonstration of:

    • Correlation with the magazine’s brand values
    • Strong cover lines which sell the content
    • Effective and original use of imagery, colour, type and/or logos as applicable
    • A very high standard of imaginative design, photography, and/or illustration
    • A front cover that presents something totally unexpected to its audienceHow the cover appeals to both new and core readers
    • A strong sense of personality
    • A unique connection with the target audience
    • How the cover appeals to both new and core readers

  • Special Edition of the Year

    This award recognises the success of a special standalone edition of a magazine, which does an exceptional job of extending the main brand. Judges will be looking for evidence of:

    • Originality or innovation within the special edition
    • How the special edition promotes the core magazine
    • Commercial success of the special edition
    • The additional value of the special edition to the readership and/or the advertisers

  • Launch of the Year

    This category celebrates new – or re-launched – print or digital magazines from Scottish publishers or for a Scottish market. For new magazines, the first edition must be dated between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. To qualify for this award, re-launched magazines should have been dormant for at least 12 months, before being relaunched between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

    Judges will look for entries that demonstrate:

    • Excellent editorial, design and production to create a title with ‘magazine magic’
    • Innovation – improving on existing products; solving a problem; or reaching new customers
    • Evidence of market research and strategy behind the launch
    • Business plan showing commercial success

  • Customer Magazine of the Year

    A customer magazine is a digital or print magazine (not a brochure, newsletter or catalogue) published at least twice a year by, or on behalf of, an organisation or company to communicate with its customers (not members). The winning magazine will add significant value to the customer’s relationship with the organisation and demonstrate all-round excellence in its editorial, design, and overall publishing values.

    Entries should demonstrate:

    • How the publication matches the customers’ information needs and/or reflects the client’s mission
    • How the publication adds value to the customer’s relationship with the organisation
    • Relevant editorial, design and production to the target audience
    • Evidence of innovation to improve the publication for the readership

     Please note that this category is open to both consumer-facing and Business Media titles.

  • Consumer Magazine of the Year

    This award is for the title that stands out as a beacon of excellence in consumer magazines.
     
    Our judges will be looking for a magazine with outstanding editorial and design, a total understanding of the needs of the target audience, and that is meeting its commercial objectives. Ideally the magazine will have a new achievement or innovation to celebrate in the past 12 months.

    Please note that a magazine may be entered in EITHER Consumer Magazine of the Year OR Special Interest Magazine of the Year, but not both.

  • Special Interest Magazine of the Year

    For the purpose of this award, a special interest magazine is one which addresses a specific consumer leisure interest (including food, health, sport, hobbies, homes, interiors, and travel) or publishes within a specific sector, such as children’s magazines or partworks.
     
    As with the Consumer Magazine of the Year award, the winning specialist magazine will demonstrate outstanding editorial and design, a sure understanding of the needs of its audience, as well as sound commercial results. Ideally the magazine will have a new achievement or innovation to celebrate in the past 12 months.  
     
    Please note that a magazine may be entered in EITHER Consumer Magazine of the Year OR Special Interest Magazine of the Year, but not both.

  • Member Magazine of the Year

    This category recognises the digital and print publication that has best served the members (not customers) of an organisation, society or institution, as a medium for news, views and information in the last year.

    Judges will look for:

    • How the publication matches the members’ information needs and reflects the organisation’s aims and values
    • How the publication adds value to the members’ relationship with the organisation
    • Well-targeted editorial, design and production for the target audience
    • Evidence of innovation to improve the publication for the readership

  • Newspaper Supplement of the Year

    Judges will look for editorial and commercial success from a newspaper supplement, produced in Scotland, which makes a significant contribution to the overall appeal of the title and has met its objectives for the past 12 months. The winning magazine will add significant value to the newspaper and demonstrate all-round excellence in its editorial, design, and overall publishing values. Judges will be looking for evidence of:

    • How the supplement broadens and deepens the relationship with the reader
    • Excellence in well-targeted editorial content, design and use of photography
    • How the supplement has supported circulation and audience growth
    • Commercial innovation to improve the bottom line

  • Specialist Magazine of the Year

    This award is for a magazine that covers a specific professional interest or a specific business sector.
     
    The winning magazine will demonstrate outstanding editorial and design, a sure understanding of the needs of its audience, as well as sound commercial results.
     
    Although the judges will note how effectively a brand has been developed across all platforms, the focus for this entry is on the magazine’s excellence in its core area, be that in print or on a digital platform.
     
    Please note that this category is open to both consumer-facing and Business Media titles.

  • Scottish Media Brand of the Year

    This award is for the Scottish magazine brand that demonstrates excellence in serving the needs of its target audience across multiple channels (print, online, face-to-face, events, broadcast, mobile, other digital offerings).
     
    Our judges are looking for a brand that has shown outstanding innovation in responding to the changing dynamics of its market. Entries should clearly demonstrate how a multi-channel approach or innovative extension of the brand has created deeper engagement with the target audience.
     
    Where different communities are being targeted, evidence will show how the brand adapts to and serves the requirements of each community.
     
    While creativity and innovation are paramount, the judges will also be looking for evidence of a strong commercial performance from the brand during the last 12 months.
