Legislation to allow Deposit Libraries to gather online publications and web content for posterity, harvesting week by week, or perhaps even day by day - both free content and data behind subscription firewalls – is imminent. You can see the point of storing web content so that historians will get a complete picture of how today’s events were reported and reviewed - but who gets to do the gathering, the library using robots; or will publishers be required to deliver digital files? What’s the cost and logistics for publishers? And who can access the content once it’s gathered?
