The Scottish Magazine Awards are dedicated to upholding and celebrating the highest standards in all aspects of magazine publishing. Categories cover a wide range of disciplines across consumer, business and customer publishing and provide a unique opportunity for publications, brands and individuals to gain industry recognition for outstanding achievement over the past 12 months. The awards cover a range of different subjects to reflect the growth and diversity of the industry and are given for work originally published in Scotland, or for work published outside Scotland but addressing the Scottish market, regardless of where the publication originated. Publishers are invited to enter fifteen categories and the top award, Scottish Magazine of the Year, is selected from category winners.

The Scottish Magazine Awards gala dinner and ceremony is held in Edinburgh and Glasgow in alternate years. This year, around 400 key decision makers from Scotland’s leading magazine publishers and UK-wide industry suppliers attended the ceremony in the truly spectacular surroundings of Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, on Thursday 26th November 2009.
Guest speakers play an important role in setting the tone at the Awards ceremony and over the years have included CBI president Helen Alexander CBE, Redwood Publishing chairman Christopher Ward and Sally Cartwright OBE, previously director at large at HELLO! magazine. The guest speaker for 2009 is Mike Russell MSP, Minister for Culture. Mike has enjoyed a long and illustrious career as an author and journalist and has been closely involved with the magazine industry in Scotland for many years.
Music and entertainment are also a key element in any celebration and this year at Our Dynamic Earth, guests will be entertained by The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland during the pre-dinner drinks reception. Our hosts for the award ceremony add an extra sparkle to the evening and have included the elegant and immensely engaging Giles Brandreth, BBC Scotland’s Fred MacAulay and Jackie Bird, television’s glamorous Carol Smillie and the irrepressible Festival Fringe comedian, Craig Hill. Our host this year is Cathy MacDonald, who currently heads up a live radio show on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal, presents Medical Matters for BBC Radio Scotland and hosts the annual live coverage of the National MOD.
