Response from members to the PPA salary survey has been high with more than 20 participants already committed to joining the scheme in 2006. The annual survey – available only to members - benefits companies by enabling them to benchmark salary trends and employment conditions.

Digital editions - a new route to market?

The benefits of publishing digital editions will be debated by independent publishers at an Independent Publishers Advisory Council (IPAC) forum on 15 February 2006. Readers can download digital editions of their magazines, allowing publishers to circumvent hard copy distribution issues.

FIPP launches survey of business magazine websites

Publishers of business and professional magazines are invited to take part in online global research which is being carried out by the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP). It will study good practice online among successful publishers and update the well-received survey conducted by FIPP in 2003.

Magazines and professional media seek alliance with creative and cultural skills

The Board of Creative and Cultural Skills has agreed a formal request on behalf of magazine publishing and professional media by PPA and Periodicals Training Council (PTC) to enter into talks to formulate a strategic alliance with the Sector Skills Council, commencing in January 2006.

OFT points the way on “public policy”

As the newspaper and magazine industries continue to await the OFT’s announcement on its final opinion on competition issues related to the retail supply chain, now expected mid January, recently appointed OFT chief executive, John Fingleton, has pointed the way back to government on public policy issues, by saying there were “social and environmental” consequences outside of the OFT’s remit. This echoes the argument that PPA has consistently made over the course of the past 18 months that guaranteeing access to a free and diverse press should be a matter for Government rather than the OFT.

Podcasting - what's the point?

Recently named ‘word of the year’ by the New Oxford American Dictionary, ‘Podcasting’ has gone mainstream with media giants such as Emap, Guardian Newspapers, Reed Business Information and the Telegraph Group all embracing this new concept in content delivery.
