A third of young adults on Twitter, survey finds

A third of young adults are posting or reading messages on Twitter, new research reported by Netimperative has found.

The study, conducted by Pew Internet and American Life Project, revealed that internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were the heaviest users of the microblogging service in 2009.

In contrast, just 15 per cent of the same group was likely to write a blog, down from 24 per cent in 2006.

Blogging was up among internet users aged 30 and over (11 per cent compared with 7 per cent previously) but down among teenagers, with just 14 per cent likely to write a blog – half the figure recorded in 2006.

Even fewer teenagers (8 per cent) said they used Twitter but nearly two-thirds used text messages and almost three-quarters claimed to belong to online communities.
