The Publishers Licensing Society Limited (PLS) provides rights management services to the publishing industry. Our primary remit is to oversee Collective Licensing in the UK for book, magazine, journal and website copying.

Together with the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society, we own and direct the Copyright Licensing Agency. We also work in partnership with NLA media access.

We are a not-for-profit organisation, set up for the industry, by the industry.

What is Collective Licensing?
Collective Licensing offers a simple and cost effective solution both for those who wish to copy from published materials without breaking the law, and for rights holders where direct licensing would be inefficient and unduly burdensome.

A blanket licence allows users to copy from a broad range of repertoire in return for a licence fee, so providing convenience and excellent value for money. The licence fee is paid to the rights holders whose publications have been shown to have been copied.

Our other services

- PLSclear - a web-based tool that streamlines the permissions process.

- PLSe - free rights management service for publishers.

- Access to Research - an initiative that provides UK library users with access to free academic articles.
