Empire Celebrates the 100 Greatest Movies of the Century

Empire unveils its definitive list of the greatest 100 films voted for by critics and readers.

Bauer Media’s film magazine Empire is to publish six covers celebrating the magazine’s 100 Greatest Movies of the Century, voted for by critics and readers. The results of the poll were revealed in a daily countdown of the greatest films from 100 to 1 on Empireonline.com. The full list is published in the March issue, on newsstands Thursday 23 January 2020.

The six covers feature Empire’s pick of six movie masterpieces, which are all featured on the definitive list of 100 greatest films made over the last 20 years, including the number one most voted for movie which is Mad Max: Fury Road. For the first time in the magazine’s history, each newsstand cover has been given unique creative treatment and illustrated exclusively by Paul Shipper.

The set of six collectable covers feature the following film greats:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road (voted number 1)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (voted number 7).
  • Wonder Woman (voted number 33);
  • Donnie Darko (voted number 37);
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King (voted number 43);
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (voted number 48);

The subscriber cover also features the top film Mad Max: Fury Road, photographed exclusively for Empire by Damian Bennett.

Over 35 pages in the special issue, Empire counts down the 100 film favourites, which reflect the exciting and vibrant state of the movie industry over the first two decades of the 21st century. From blockbusters to indie surprises, the past 20 years have taken cinema to new heights. Empire has also interviewed and photographed the directors who made the films afresh for the issue with their reactions to the results, including: George Miller (_Mad Max: Fury Road_), Greta Gerwig (_Lady Bird_), Sofia Coppola (_Lost in Translation_), Edgar Wright (_Baby Driver_), Paul King (_Paddington 2_), James Mangold (_Logan_), and Francis Lee (_God’s Own Country_).

Empire invited film critics to vote for their greatest films and they declared Mad Max: Fury Road as their firm favourite. The magazine’s readers favoured The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring as their most-loved film, over Mad Max: Fury Road which was their second placed film. The results of the critics and readers polls were combined to arrive at the definitive rundown of the 100 greatest movies over the first two decades of the century. The Top 100 list will be celebrated in a unique way across Empire’s touch points: print, digital, audio, and social channels. A special two-part podcast is being produced with readers invited to join the discussion about the films which made it onto the list and those that didn‘t.

Commenting on the 100 Greatest Movies of the Century issue, Editor-in-chief of Empire Terri White said: “We’re starting the year off right at Empire, with a full-throated celebration of the greatest movies of the last century. From our six illustrated magazine covers to debate, discussion (and let’s be honest, probably fighting) over broadcast, digital and social, we can’t wait to celebrate the movies that have thrilled us and our readers over the last two decades."

All six collectable covers, priced £5.99 each, will be available to purchase from newsstands or via Great Magazines at www.greatmagazines.co.uk/century on Thursday 23 January. A copy of the new issue of Pilot TV is bagged to the March issue of Empire.
