PPA Live! with The Week Junior

Yesterday the PPA hosted a PPA Live! session with Anna Bassi, Editor-in-Chief of The Week Junior. In her conversation with Barry McIlheney, Bassi spoke about how The Week Junior in the UK and the US educates children in a "clear, concise and objective" way.

Aimed at an audience of 8-14 years old, Bassi stressed the importance of not "patronising or speaking down to children" but rather communicating news in a clear and digestible fashion. The Week Junior aims to strip back every story, presenting the facts behind it and providing children with the knowledge to form their own opinions and alleviate anxiety.

Since launching in the UK in 2015, subscriptions have risen from 5,000 to 90,000, increasing by 300 to 500 each week. "There has been a huge surge in subscriptions during lockdown" says Bassi, as parents have been home schooling children.

Bassi and McIlheney went on to discuss the recent launch of The Week Junior US in March this year. Despite the first issue coinciding with lock down in New York, the launch went ahead and has continued successfully ever since.

"If anything, The Week Junior US Is more important than ever," Bassi says having now launched 11 issues.

When asked what lessons she has learnt as Editor-in-Chief of The Week Junior, Bassi explained that children's magazines don't have to be "bursting with everything", but instead it's about "producing an accessible experience and realising that kids are a lot smarter than we think."
