A collective voice

The PPA works with key organisations and professional associations to provide an important touchpoint for our industry, ensuring proper representation for our members where it is most needed.

A report out by Venn Digital in 2021 showed that as a collective our sector contributes £3.7bn to the UK economy, providing over 55,000 jobs across the country.

And we have a role to play, with 84% of UK population connecting with PPA member brands.

The sector also flies the flag for the UK abroad, with over 73 million magazines sold in export markets in 2019, contributing an estimated £519m of net inflow to UK PLC through exports.

Influencing policy

Our public affairs work is focussed on coming together as a collective to ensure the best business environment when it comes to policy and regulation. The Online Safety Bill, the formation of the Digital Markets Unit, Royal Mail regulation, Subscription Contracts regulation and the Online Sales Tax have been just a few areas of focus in recent months.

We continue to connect with members through dinners, the Digital Regulation and Policy Forum (DRPF), and by facilitating meetings with MPs and their local publishing businesses; as well as keeping them informed and updated via online articles and external media activity.

Engagement with a broad range of stakeholders including ministers, government departments, regulators, peers and MPs – as well as numerous allied organisations – allows us to exert influence from policy-first inception, right through to implementation.

Representing members across the media sector

The PPA’s position on various boards and steering groups allow us to represent PPA members at the most influential level, ensuring the best possible environment.

These include:

Working with and supporting the supply chain

The PPA manages the industry’s relationship with Royal Mail on issues including pricing, quality of service and product development. We are responsible for setting the industry’s position on regulatory issues relating to the postal market and working with the postal regulator, Ofcom.
Ensuring prominent promotion and timely display is crucial to driving in store sales for the magazine sector. As a PPA member we facilitate collaboration between retailers and publishers to support retail excellence, and a positive experience from across the supply chain.
