The PPA Carbon Calculator

Measure, monitor and reduce your magazine brand’s carbon footprint across print and digital with the new online PPA Carbon Calculator tool.

Overview

Over the past two decades, the PPA and its members have engaged in a series of industry-wide initiatives to understand, minimise and manage the impacts of magazine publishing in the UK.

The PPA Carbon Calculator is a key element of this work, and this version allows publishers to estimate the anticipated carbon footprint of four key elements of their business:

  • The carbon impacts arising from office buildings
  • The carbon impacts associated with travel (e.g. business travel or journalistic fieldwork)
  • The carbon impact of printed titles
  • The carbon impact of digital products
  • NEW FEAUTURES TO LAUNCH IN 2023

Background

The PPA’s Carbon Calculator was originally launched in May 2009 to wide acclaim, receiving the award for Best Environmental Initiative at the Trade Association Forum Awards. Since 2010, we have refined the calculator to reflect user experiences and ensure that carbon factors (and other metrics) within the software are up to date. We have improved the diversity, transparency and accuracy of data provided by paper manufacturers and printers (88% of a magazine’s footprint). In 2023 a new upgraded calculator will be launched to allow members to additionally measure the footprint of their events.

From the outset, the PPA has sought to push boundaries by tracking and applying the very latest thinking and the best available data and methodologies. As a result, the carbon footprinting initiative has been widely acclaimed and is regularly held up as an example of best industry practice. The development and application of the carbon footprinting initiative will be a key element of the voluntary PPA Action Net Zero Commitment, which will provide a structure for the industry to continue to achieve challenging environmental targets on a voluntary basis without the need for government regulation.
